Rowntree Clark are leading private art advisors in 20th Century British Art.

We pride ourselves on working with paintings of a distinct aesthetic. We bring a genuine passion for the subject, with a strong art historical bias, combined with a knowledge of the market that can be invaluable to both the experienced and first time buyer. We provide our clients with the service of distinguishing the very best on the market. In turn, this has given us the pleasure of helping build some wonderful collections by brokering the sales of some of the great works by British artists this century.

Bottom line, Rowntree Clark help our clients build well-advised collections that have long-term art historical and in turn commercial value.

Established in 2009 by Edward Clark, we are specialist consultants in 20th Century British Art, with a particular interest in 1950s and early 1960s abstract gestural painting - specifically work from the late 1950s by aritists such as Peter Lanyon, Robyn Denny, Sandra Blow, Roger Hilton, Gillian Ayres, Richard Smith, Harold Cohen, Joe Tilson, Patrick Heron, Paul Feiler, Bernard Cohen and William Scott.

Before establishing Rowntree Clark, Edward graduated from the Courtauld Institute of Art in 1998 and for 12 years worked for two leading West End dealers. We have exhibited at many of the major art fairs throughout the world and have acted as an advisor for the Arts Council England among other roles.

The boutique nature of our business means we work solely on behalf of our clients acting as agents on an annual retainer fee, or a transparent commission of 10% + VAT up to £100,000 and 4% + VAT thereafter up to £500,000.

We give specialist market advise to clients on consigning and purchasing works, whether privately or at auction, including:

  • Negotiating the best possible fee structure for consignments

  • Specialist transparent provenance and market history research

  • Bidding strategies at auction

  • Brokering private sales both in the gallery and auction markets

  • Viewing works for clients advising on quality and condition

  • Valuation and re-sale value consultation

  • When needed, we bid on a client’s behalf

  • Pre and post sale logistics including shipping, framing and conservation
