Not much is known about Sigrist as an artist other than he was clearly very active in the late Fifties but unfortunately died prematurely in 1965. Exhibiting at Gimpel Fils in their famous Young Contemporaries exhibitions would have been a great honour and stepping stone for his career. His work then clearly impressed William Gear who purchased a painting - in a similar vein to this work - for the Towner Gallery collection when he was curator at the museum in the late Fifties and early Sixties. This short golden period of British abstract expressionist painting was particularly fruitful and Sigrist's work has many parallels to the wonderful work produced by Robyn Denny, Richard Smith and the Cohens at this moment.
